D Oval Brass Mat with velvet imprinted lining
E. Jacobs Estimated Date - 1850s
E. Jacobs / Edward Jacobs Edward
Jacobs opened his gallery at the corner of Camp
and Canal streets in 1844 listed as a daguerrean.
His gallery was one of the best known in the city
of New Orleans and he received an excellent reputation
for ambrotypes and paper prints in later years.
He imported a large collection of rare paintings
from Europe that were on display at his gallery
in addition to the photographic works. His interest
in painting eventually outweighed his photographic
tendencies and in 1858, he sold his establishment
and moved to Europe to study painting. He however
returned in 1859 advertising himself as a painter
of miniatures in oil and a professor of art, but
unable to keep away from photography took a position
at Lipman's gallery. His return was commented
on in the Times Picayune "Of course, there'll
be a rush there by his scores of friends to see
the `returned one' and welcome him back."
(Smith/Tucker 85-87).
